A strategy to stop sacrificing your soul for a business

Let’s say I achieve my goal of becoming a 5.0 tennis player (top 2% of all USTA ranked tennis players)

Now, I am beating most people I play, which is so fun.

People are impressed with me. The world sees me as a hard working, talented man which makes me highly attractive and desirable.

I have achieved my most desirable goal and the world recognizes it.

That feels really good. I am truly happy with the player I have become.

    What happens then?

    I have 2 options:

    1. Keep playing tennis because it brings me joy
    2. It no longer brings me joy so I go pursue something new

If you imagine a million scenario’s where you achieve everything you have ever want and ask yourself what you would do next, the answer seems to always come back to: whatever makes me happy.

That means what makes you happy comes from the act of doing, not having.

You’ve heard this before: it’s the journey not the destination.

However, I don’t think what makes you happy is just doing what makes you happy.

I practice my serve multiple hours a week because it’s challenging AND I love it.

If I woke up with a 135 MPH serve tomorrow, would tennis still make me happy? I don’t think it would.

Similar to the lottery winners who end up at the same wealth they had before. Waking up with money didn’t make them wealthy.

There is something very important about change to us humans.

    Is growth essential to joy?

Thats why I don’t think it’s just about doing what makes you happy.

What makes you happy is getting better at what makes you happy.

If that’s true, then why are we so hard on ourselves when we face challenges when challenges are exactly what we want?

I think it’s because most people never allow themselves to own what they truly want. If you don’t allow yourself to own what you truly want, how can you ever enjoy pursuing it? The pursuit will always be tinged with resistance and contraction.

True joy comes from being grateful about what you currently have AND getting exciting about having more of it so that you fall in love with the journey to obtain it.

That’s why it’s easy to love practicing my serve, despite how challenging it is.

If all this is true, then what if became your entire social media strategy?

Don’t get the word “strategy” twisted in your head. I’m not saying to share the journey because that’s what will make us money because only when we have enough money we can do what we want which will then make you happy.

    No, no, no.

    That’s more of the same.

I’m saying sharing the pursuit on social media IS THE THING that will make you happy.

Of course, I know why most people don’t do this as their social media strategy.

We fear other people’s perceptions of us.

The Judgement. Shame. Ridicule. Teasing. Rejection. Hate.

    It’s scary!!

What if people watch me spend the next 10 years, pay tens of thousands of dollars on lessons, play 1,000 tennis matches and I still never become a 5.0 tennis player?

What if I can’t make $150,000 in the last 6 months of 2025?

What if I quit halfway through the swim of a triathlon?

What will everyone think of me?

Let’s pretend a minute that you were free of that fear.

Truly 100% no fucks to give about what mom, dad, siblings, friends, competitors and mentors think about you.

    What would you do then?

Would you unapologetically, relentlessly pour everything you had into your pursuit of joy?

If the number one fear standing in your way of pursuing a happier life is the judgement of others and the only way to move past your fears is to face them, then it would make sense to say the only way to overcome the fear of judgement is to subject yourself to judgement as you pursue your happiest life.

It’s really quite a beautiful social media strategy when you look at it closely.

Share the pursuit of living your happiest life so you can overcome the thing keeping you back from living your happiest life so you can live your happiest life.

The strategy is selfishly for YOU, first.

Screw your audience! (not really, but a little bit just for a second here)

For example, let’s say you publicly commit to a big bold goal like, “I’m gonna make $150,000 in the final 6 months of the year.” Imagine how much more integrity you would be with every decision you make.

I’m sayin, if I put a gun to your head and said, “you have to update your audience every week on the progress of your goal, the challenges you’re facing and what you’re doing to achieve it,” how would you behave?

Would you keep pushing back your launch 3 more times?

Would you keep avoiding reaching out to previous clients and hot leads who are a perfect fit for your new offer because you’re afraid of rejection?

Would you be a nasty shameful asshole to yourself when you share your set backs on social media because that’s the way you’ve been speaking to yourself in your head?

    No.

    You would change.

Because deep down you know EXACTLY what you need to do.

Now, you finally get to become exactly who you want to be as you do the things required of you to hit your goals.

Little by little you start to self correct and self coach (one of the hardest things to do) because you value integrity. You slow down and reflect. You begin to consciously utilize all the tools that have gotten you here and continue to uncover new tools to support your journey.

You do all this FOR YOU because getting better at the thing you love is what makes you happy.

Just so happens all this IS great content AND sharing accelerates the growth.

You get to use social media as a tool to learn how to effectively articulate your challenges, experiences and tools that have helped you grow. As you articulate your journey with the world you further embody and engrain those lessons and tools into your bones which makes you an even stronger leader and more effective coach.

When you stop pretending to have it all figured out but instead allow the world to see that you are the embodied leader in the trenches committed to taking the bold action that they aren’t brave enough to take, you stand out.

As you pursue you happiest life you build your beloved brand and your business grows.

This is what I call StoryLiving.

You no longer have to tell yourself, “when I make more money, then I can do more of what I love.”

Pursuing and sharing what you love is the thing that gets you more of what you love faster.

This is the foundation of the StoryGrowth Mastermind.

The pursuit of your truest deepest desires.

    And honestly…

    It’s so scary.

I’m asking a lot from you and I get that.

    Trust me I do.

It took me two years to do the Voldemort Project. I knew I wanted to let you in on my financial journey years ago but but I was too afraid.

I am only 57 days in to the Voldemort Project and I feel more free than I ever have in my life.

I don’t want you to wait 2 years to do what is on your heart.

My hope is that you’ll join the Mastermind so that we can support you with the content strategy that aligns with the business, brand and legacy you’re building AND so that you don’t have to do all this work alone.

I want to offer you a community that is safe space to…

    • uncover your deepest desires
    • share crazy ideas
    • name your fears and overcome unconscious patterns
    • and challenge each other to go bigger and bolder

The StoryGrowth Mastermind is application only and not everyone will be accepted.

Applications for the first cohort open on Monday, September 8th.

The cohort is a year long commitment with an in person retreat.

Because of the retreat, spots are limited—being on the waitlist gives you fist access to the group—join the waitlist here.

    With love,

    Matt

PS—I am modeling the StoryLiving strategy in my pursuit of the Voldemort Project right now. I will reach my goal of hitting $150,000 before 2026 which I imagine that will make cohort 2 (launching late winter 2026) more desirable and likely that I will raise the price significantly. I don’t say this to scare you, only to communicate expectations. Please make the right decision for yourself.
